What is Fan Tan?

Fan Tan, one of the oldest traditional Chinese games, that has become popular in casinos for its simplicity. It literally means “repeated divisions”, which represents the beads that are divided into columns consisting of 4 rows of beads, and the remaining beads in the last group are counted, based on which the bets are won and lost.

Basic rules

In Fan Tan, a square is marked at the center of a table, with the sides being marked 1, 2, 3 and 4. On each side, ‘Fan’ is written, and numbers are also marked at each corner of the square. The croupier initially covers a double handful of beads with a transparent box, and mixes the beads. Game Terms

Fan – Fan is the most basic bet in Fan Tan. It is a wager on a specific number on the table, and is a high risk bet in Fan Tan.

For instance, if you’re betting on 2 beads, and place your bets on ‘2 Fan’, you win if the final batch contains two beads.

Odd and Even  – A player can bet on the odd or even nature of the final batch of beads.

For instance, if you’re betting on the final batch of beads having an odd number of beads, and the result is either 1 or 3, then you win. Otherwise, you lose your wager.

Zheng – In the ‘Zheng’ area, if you bet on a number on the table, but the number of beads is equal to its opposite number, then you lose. If the number of beads is not equal to the number you bet on, or its opposite number on the table, then it is considered a draw. If the number of beads is equal to the number you bet on, then you win.

For instance, if you bet on ‘1 Zheng’, and the final batch has 3 beads, then you lose. If it has either 2 or 4 beads, then you draw. If the final batch has only one bead, then you win.

Nim – When you’re betting in the ‘Nim’ area of the table, if you bet on the first number, i.e; the number to the left of ‘Nim’, and the number of beads is equal to it, then you win. If you bet on the number to the right of ‘Nim’, and the number of beads is equal to it, then you draw. If it’s any other number, then you lose.

For example, if you’re betting on ‘2 Nim 3’ area, and the number of beads in the final batch is 3, then you draw. If the number of beads in the final batch is 2, then you win the wager. If the number of beads is either 1 or 4, then you lose the wager.

Kwok – When you’re betting in the ‘Kwok’ area of the table, if the number of beads is equal to either one of the numbers in the area you bet on, then you win. Otherwise, you lose the wager.

For instance, if you’re betting on ‘3 4’ in the Kwok area of the table, and the number of beads in the final batch is equal to either 3 or 4, then you win the wager. If the number of beads is equal to either 1 or 2, then you lose.

Tong – When you’re betting in the ‘Tong’ area of the table, you bet on three numbers, with the first two numbers to win, and the third to lose. Tong bets include “1Tong”, “2Tong”, “3Tong” and “4Tong”, and if the beads in the final batch is equal to the Tong number, then you lose. Otherwise, you draw.

For example, if you’re betting on “2 3” in the 4Tong area of the table, you win the wager if the number of beads is equal to either 2 or 3. If the number of beads is equal to 4, you lose the wager. If the final batch has just one bead, you draw.

Chun – When you’re betting in the ‘Chun’ area of the table, you bet on the possibility of the number of beads being equal to one of the three numbers in the betting area. If the number of beads in the final batch is not equal to one of the three numbers, then you lose the wager.

For instance, if you’re betting on ‘1 2 3’ in the Chun area of the table, you win the wager if the number of beads is either equal to 1, 2 or 3. If the number of beads in the final batch is equal to 4, then you lose the wager.

Placing bets in Fan Tan

Once the croupier covers a handful of beads with the metal bowl, you will hear, “Start betting”, upon which the participants place their bets on different betting areas on the table. The participants can choose the betting amount from the chips available, or input their betting amount. The betting period closes when the dealer says, “Stop betting. No betting in this game”. The croupier proceeds to spread the beads in groups using a bamboo stick, and once the croupier gets to the final batch, the number of beads are counted. The losing bets are then collected, and the croupier pays out the winnings.

The house takes a commission of 5% from all the payouts.

Payout Amounts

An odd or even bet has an even money payout on the initial bet, minus the house commission. For example, if you place a bet of Rs. 500 on even number of beads and win, you win back Rs. 950.

A Zheng bet has an even money payout on the initial bet, minus the house commission. For example, if you place a bet of Rs. 500 on 2 Zheng on the table, and there are two beads remaining in the final batch, you win back Rs. 950. However, if there are four beads, you lose. If there are either one or three beads remaining, then you get back your betting amount.

A Fan bet has a payout of 3:1, minus the house commission. For example, if you place a bet of Rs. 1000 on 1 Fan on the table, and there is one bead remaining in the final batch, you win back Rs. 3800. However, if there are any other number of beads, you lose.

A Nim bet has a payout of 2:1, minus the house commission. For example, if you place a bet of Rs. 500 on 1 Nim 3 on the table, and there is one bead remaining in the final batch, you win back Rs. 1425. However, if there are two or four beads, you lose, and if there are three beads, then you get back your betting amount.

A Kwok bet has an even money payout on the initial bet, minus the house commission. For example, if you place a bet of Rs. 500 on ‘1 2’ on the table, and there are either one or two beads remaining in the final batch, you win back Rs. 950. If there are three or four beads, you lose.

A Tong bet has a payout of 1:2, minus the house commission.
