Albania, 70th in the FIFA world rankings, produced a huge surprise on Sunday as they defeated Portugal in their Euro 2016 Group I qualifying match in Aveiro. A volley from Bekim Balaj proved decisive to defeat 2012 semi-finalists Portugal. The hosts were without their star though, Cristiano Ronaldo was unavailable, but former Manchester United player Nani was included in the starting line up.
Elsewhere, Robert Lewandowski bagged four goals as newcomers Gibraltar were thrashed 7-0 by Poland in Group D. There will probably be more such results for Gibraltar as their group also includes Germany, the Republic of Ireland, Georgia and Scotland. Kamil Grosicki bagged a brace for Poland, while Lukasz Szukala also found the back of the net for his first international goal.
Denmark did well to come from behind to beat Armenia, with Thomas Kahlenberg scoring the decisive goal of the Group I match in Copenhagen. The Faroe Islands, 183rd in the world rankings, took the lead against Finland but eventually they were beaten 3-1 in Group F, while Romania won 1-0 away to Greece in the same group. Also in Group F Hungary were surprisingly beaten at home by Northern Ireland.
Despite the shock defeat Portugal are still the favourites in Group I, they are 11/8 at Bet365 to win the group.
