Everton make their return to European football at Goodison Park on Thursday evening when they host Wolfsburg in Europa League Group H. The Toffees haven’t played in an European competition since 2009-2010, this time they qualified directly for the group stage after finishing fifth in the Premier League last season.
Roberto Martinez and his men had a decent start to their Premier League campaign, with one win, one defeat and two draws. Wolfsburg have done slightly worse so far in the Bundesliga, taking just two points out of the possible nine.
Sylvain Distin and Samuel Eto’o will be available for the match after having recovered from injuries. Bryan Oviedo and Arouna Kone will remain out of contention, but they should be back to match fitness fairly soon. Wolfsburg will be without Ivan Perisic due to a shoulder injury, but key players Luiz Gustavo, Kevin De Bryune and Ivica Olic are all expected to start.
Probable starting line-ups:
Everton: Howard – Coleman, Distin, Jagielka, Baines – Barry, McCarthy – Mirallas, Naismith, McGeady – Lukaku
Wolfsburg: Benaglio – Jung, Naldo, Knoche, Rodriguez – Malanda Adje, Gustavo – Caligiuri, Arnold, De Bruyne – Olic
My prediction: 1-1 draw.
Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:
Everton win – 21/20
Draw – 5/2
Wolfsburg win – 5/2
